ROOM ASSIGNMENTS:

Children have been given a temporary room assignment. In the event that his/her room assignment must be changed, please help your child to understand. After adjustments have been made due to changes in enrollment, children will, for the most part, remain in the same class all year. Changes are expected to be completed by Norm Day (September 14, 2013).

ABSENCES AND ATTENDANCE :
Regular attendance is important to your child's success in school.  If your child must be absent, please send a note stating the reason for the absence.  In case of illness, please be specific.  If your child has been absent three days, please call the school to let us know the child's condition.  If the illness is five or more days, the child must be readmitted through the office.  We need a doctor's note for injuries with stitches, surgery, hospitalization, casts, splints, major head injuries, or any long, serious illness.  Students with casts will not be allowed on the playground during recess, lunch or physical education times.

MEDICATION:
If it is necessary for your child to take medication during school hours, please contact our school office for the correct procedure and to get the necessary forms which must be completed.  The parent or authorized adult must deliver the medication in the prescription bottle.  Children may not bring medication of any kind to school.

EMERGENCY CARDS:
An emergency card (required by state law) with complete information is vital for the school in the event we need to reach you, a neighbor, a relative or a friend.  We cannot release a child to a person unless his/her name is on the card.  We will appreciate its immediate return.  On the reverse side of this card is a space for you to sign for authorization of emergency medical treatment.  Throughout the year, if any changes occur you must inform the office in writing (i.e., address change requires – lease rental agreement or current utility bill).  We need a minimum of three (3) different phone numbers for emergency contacts which may include home and work numbers as well as family and friends whom you authorize to care for your child.

SAFETY:
Parents are urged to teach their children the safest and shortest route to school, emphasizing the use of traffic control signals and crosswalks.  The traffic in the front of the school is quite heavy and the dangers are apparent as children and automobiles appear on the scene.  Children are to enter the school through pedestrian gates only.  Children and parents are NOT to walk through the parking lot driveway at any time.  The staff will instruct students on safe pedestrian practices and will continue to do so throughout the year. Children driven by car to school should exit the car using the school’s Valet Service on Clover and Military Avenues.

Please stress to your child that he/she use the crosswalk when crossing the street.  It is very important that children see their parents modeling safe and appropriate use of the crosswalks.  Your support of our instruction to children is needed and will be appreciated.  The safety of everyone is our prime concern.  Please stress the importance of respect for property of others.  Also, discuss the importance of not speaking to or accepting rides from strangers.

Children may not bring knives, sharp pointed instruments, guns, toy guns, caps, bullets, etc. to school.  Any articles of the type mentioned will be taken away if brought to school and the student will be disciplined per District Policy, which may include suspension and/or expulsion.  This is for the child's safety as well as the safety of other children.  Pupils, while under the jurisdiction of the school, are prohibited from selling, buying, firing, or possessing fireworks, matches or lighters of any kind.

FEDERAL LUNCH INFORMATION:

Reminder: Please be sure to return your lunch ticket application as quickly as possible. Until your child receives lunch tickets, or you are informed of his/her status, parents are responsible for providing lunch or money for the purchase of breakfast/lunch.

  • Full price breakfast is $1.00: reduced price is free.
  • Full price lunch is $1.50: reduced price is $0.40.
  • Milk and orange juice are $0.50 each.

INSURANCE:
The school district carries no policy covering student injuries.  However, on a completely voluntary basis, you have the opportunity to enroll your child in a student accident plan.  Please contact United Healthcare for any questions you may have (1-866-409-5733) or enroll online (www.k12studentinsurance.com).

COMMUNICATION:
As a community we feel that open communication is an essential component of a successful school.  The Cloverleaf is our parent newsletter and serves as our primary communication tool.  The Cloverleaf is sent home with students.  If you would like to be kept updated by E-mail, the Booster Club has that capability.  Please provide them with your E-mail address.

In addition, notices, flyers and phone calls using our school communication system are sent throughout the year to keep parents informed of meetings, special events, holidays or important information as it occurs.  Classroom teachers may also send letters to inform parents of classroom specific information.

A variety of meetings are held throughout the year to promote open dialogue and opportunities to discuss issues and/or concerns.  There are both day and evening meetings and notices to announce date and time will be included in the Cloverleaf or a separate flyer.

VOLUNTEER  PROGRAM:
You can help in many ways through our volunteer program.  Help is needed in classrooms, office, library, garden, and throughout the school.  There is always a  place to use your talents or  interests at Clover.  Click here for more information on volunteering at Clover.

ENROLLMENT:
Due to the increase of neighborhood resident students, we are only able to enroll students living in the Clover attendance area.  Continuing permits will be approved on a space available basis  providing that parents meet eligibility requirements. Please refer to the Registration Info page for more details.

HOMEWORK:
Homework is a vital part of the learning process.  All students receive homework Monday through Thursday.  Please provide an appropriate environment in which your child can practice and complete classroom homework.  A quiet location, free of distraction and noise will help children focus on learning.  Occasionally, teachers may assign homework over a weekend.  This may include a long term project or report.  You are reminded that homework is to be done by the child.  They need you to support their learning.  Any homework concerns should be discussed with the teacher.  District guidelines for the assignment of homework is as follows:

  • Kindergarten     15-20 minutes/day
  • Grades 1 & 2         30-35 minutes/day
  • Grades 3 & 4        35-40 minutes/day
  • Grade 5                   50-60 minutes/day

Individual students may complete assignments a little faster or slower than these guidelines.

VISITS AND CONFERENCES:
You are welcome to visit classrooms.  You must obtain a visitor's permit in the office before entering the classroom.   Board of Education visitation rules are printed on the permit.  It is important for safety reasons that we know who is on the grounds at all times.  All parents are invited to visit school as often as they are able, provided their visit is not disruptive to the classroom.  Conferences to discuss an individual child should be held when the teacher is free of instructional responsibility with the class.  Teachers are normally available for conferences before school begins and after dismissal.  An appointment should be made to avoid scheduling conflicts.  The principal is available to meet with parents.  Please call for an appointment at (310)479-7739.

DRESS STANDARDS  :
We will continue to depend upon your good taste and common sense in sending neat, clean and properly dressed children to Clover Avenue Elementary School.  Elementary students, unlike secondary students, do not have gym lockers or the opportunity to change clothing during the school day.  So we have a few safety reminders - shoes must be suitable for an active program with no open toes or heels, no sandals or boots.  It is also required that students wear socks daily.   Children should be appropriately dressed to participate in all school activities.  Students are encouraged to wear hats for sun protection, but hats may not be worn indoors.

We ask your cooperation in seeing that children's personal belongings such as wraps, rain wear, and lunch boxes are identified with their names.  Many jackets, sweatshirts, sweaters, etc. look very similar.  It is amazing how many lost & found items are accumulated during the year.  The Lost & Found is located in the auditorium.  Fridays are Clover Spirit days.  All children, parents and teachers are  encouraged to wear their Clover shirts or green on Fridays.  Occasionally throughout the year there will be special "theme dress" days (i.e. silly hat day, college spirit day, etc.)  A notice will be sent home to inform you.  It is hoped that all students will join in the fun.

PERSONAL PROPERTY:
We strongly urge you to label all of your child's belongings with his/her full name and room number with indelible ink.  It may help us to find the owner.  The name on sack lunches helps also.   Children are not to bring radios, mp3 players, CD players, tape recorders, electronic games and other expensive items to school.  If a child should bring them to school for a special approved activity, he/she has the responsibility for their safe keeping.  Toys, including trading cards (baseball, Pokemon, Harry Potter, etc.) should also not be brought to school.  Toys will be taken from students and returned only to a parent.  We request that children bring to school only those things which directly relate to the educational program.  Bicycles, skateboards, scooters and skates may not be ridden on the school grounds at anytime.  Students wishing to ride a bike to school must have the permission of the principal and follow district policy and procedure.  Skates, skateboards and scooters are not to be brought to school under any circumstances. Cell phones must remain off and stored in a backpack or pocket where it is not visible during normal school hours. Students are permitted to appropriately use cell phones on campus before and after school only.

ARRIVAL TIME:
If possible, the best time for children to arrive is 5 to 10 minutes before the beginning of school.  Pupils are tardy if not in their classrooms when the 8:10 a.m. bell rings.  Children who do not eat breakfast at school should not arrive before 7:40 a.m.  Please remember that supervision of students begins at 7:40 a.m.  It is not safe to drop off students prior to that time because there are no adults on duty to watch them. Children arriving late to school are required to bring a note stating the reason for the tardiness. 

RELEASE OF CHILDREN BEFORE DISMISSAL :
Your child will NOT be released to an unidentified person.  Only a parent or authorized adult listed on the emergency card may pick him/her up during school hours.  The adult should first come to the office to sign a release slip.  The teachers may not release a child to leave the school campus.  Students will not be called to the office until after the authorized adult has presented appropriate identification and the release form has been issued.  All adults whom you authorize to pick up your child must be listed on the emergency card.

CHILD CARE:
STAR Education will be providing after school child care for students in grades K-5. Application forms are available in the office or you can contact STAR directly at 310-842-8040.

AFTER-SCHOOL ENRICHMENT:

Clover Avenue School offers a variety of after-school enrichment classes provided by STAR, Inc. which has been authorized to use our facilities.  STAR is interested in providing enrichment classes which meet the interests of our community.  Information is sent home via separate flyers.  Nominal fees are charged for these programs.  A limited number of scholarships are also available for eligible families. The STAR Enrichment Program classes will begin later in September or October.

AFTER-SCHOOL PLAYGROUND:

After-school playground is offered daily, Monday through Friday.  Parents must complete a separate registration to enroll their child in the program.  Please contact the playground director/coach for details.  Students not registered in the after-school playground program will not be allowed to stay and play after school dismissal.  This is a permissive program with limited personnel to supervise students.  It is expected that participants will follow all program rules and the directions of the coach/director.  Students who are not able to demonstrate appropriate discipline and self-control will be excluded from the program.

BOOSTER CLUB:
Ms. Tracy Boulanger is our Booster Club President. Booster Club, through its fundraising activities, provides the school with much needed supplies, personnel and programs. Get involved!  Find out about Volunteering & Fundraising opportunities.  You are encouraged to become an active and involved parent.

LEARN COUNCIL:
The LEARN/School Site Council is the governance body which makes important decisions affecting the instructional program.  It is comprised of the principal, teachers, classified staff and parents.  We welcome all interested parents to our meetings.

ST. JOHN'S PARKING LOT: Our neighbor, St. John's Presbyterian Church, is private property.  Their parking lot is reserved for their use only and other cars will be towed away at owner’s expense.  Please respect this and do not park at St. John’s.  They need all of the space for their preschool clients and congregation.  Thank you for your respectful cooperation.
